Parking at the top of the Vršič Pass will be available from 1 September 2026

The Infrastructure Directorate, together with the municipalities of Kranjska Gora and Bovec, is introducing a new traffic management system at the Vršič Pass. Its aim is to ensure safer and more orderly access to the area, improve traffic flow and provide better protection of the sensitive natural environment, particularly during the tourist season.
From 1 September 2026, new parking spaces will be available to visitors at the top of the pass as part of the reconstruction of the Vršič Road. Parking will be free of charge until the end of 2026. Final construction works will continue until the end of September 2026, while traffic across the pass will remain uninterrupted throughout this period.
The following parking spaces will be provided at the top of the pass:
- 80 parking spaces for passenger vehicles,
- three parking spaces for persons with disabilities,
- 24 parking spaces for motorcycles,
- two parking spaces for buses, and
- eight spaces for short-term stopping of passenger vehicles (up to 15 minutes).
Parking availability will be displayed to drivers on traffic signs before the barriers on both the Kranjska Gora and Trenta sides, allowing them to choose the appropriate traffic lane in good time. The occupancy information refers exclusively to public parking areas at the top of the pass and does not include parking areas at privately operated mountain huts.
Two traffic lanes
From 1 September, a barrier system will also become operational, providing regulated access to the area at the top of the pass. The barriers are located on the Kranjska Gora side beyond Lake Jasna and on the Trenta side before the turn-off for the source of the Soča River.
Before the barriers, the road widens into two traffic lanes. The right-hand lane is intended for visitors wishing to park at the top of the pass. They will collect a parking ticket at the barrier, and access will only be permitted while parking spaces are available. Parking availability will be displayed in real time on an LED display. The left-hand lane is intended for all other road users continuing across the pass or travelling to other designated parking areas and destinations along the Vršič Road.
Turning areas
A turning area has been provided before the barriers on both sides of the pass, allowing drivers to safely change direction when the parking areas at the top are full or when a longer queue forms in the right-hand lane.
If the parking queue extends to the point where the right-hand lane separates from the main traffic lane, additional vehicles will not be permitted to stop in the left-hand transit lane. In this case, drivers will be able to use the turning area or continue across the pass without the possibility of parking at the top.
Assistance for users
At weekends, traffic attendants will be present at the barriers and at the top of the pass to assist users with the new system and help manage traffic.
