Soča Valley is a popular cycling destination. However, some roads in the valley are narrow, winding and heavily congested during the main tourist season. Cyclists are therefore advised to plan their rides carefully, follow traffic regulations and choose quieter roads or designated cycling routes wherever possible.

Road safety is a shared responsibility of all road users.

Recommendations for cyclists, groups and drivers on narrow and busy roads

Before setting off

Before starting your cycling tour, check:
• the difficulty and length of the route,
• the weather forecast,
• expected traffic levels on the selected road,
• the condition of your bicycle, particularly the brakes, tyres, lights and e-bike battery,
• your physical fitness and level of experience,
• the availability of quieter roads, cycling routes or guided tours.

During the main tourist season, we recommend avoiding the busiest roads at peak traffic times. Wherever possible, choose early morning hours, quieter local roads or a guided tour with a local provider.

Follow traffic regulations

Cyclists are road users and must comply with traffic regulations, road signs and current road conditions.

HELMETS, VISIBILITY AND EQUIPMENT

For increased safety, we recommend that all cyclists wear a protective cycling helmet. In Slovenia, helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 18 and recommended for everyone, as they can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in the event of a fall or collision.

We also recommend:

  • bright or reflective clothing;
  • a white front light and a red rear light; lights are compulsory at night and in conditions of reduced visibility;
  • a bicycle that is in full working order;
  • a basic repair kit;
  • a first-aid kit;
  • enough drinking water;
  • a fully charged mobile phone.

TAKE EXTRA CARE WHEN USING AN E-BIKE

E-bikes make longer and more demanding trips possible, but they also require additional caution. Their greater weight, higher speeds and longer braking distances mean that you should adapt your riding to your level of experience.

Before riding an e-bike:

  • familiarise yourself with how the bicycle works;
  • check the battery and its estimated range;
  • test the brakes;
  • adjust your speed to your skills, not to the bicycle’s capabilities;
  • take particular care on descents, bends, gravel surfaces and wet roads.

Less experienced cyclists are advised to choose easier routes, quieter roads or guided tours.

Choose less busy roads

Some roads in Soča Valley can be very busy during the summer season. Wherever possible, choose:

Do not rely solely on navigation apps. They may direct you along the shortest or best-known route, which is not necessarily the safest. Before setting off, check local recommendations and current route conditions.

Recommendations for groups

Larger groups of cyclists can make safe overtaking more difficult on narrow roads. We therefore recommend:

What to do in the event of an accident or dangerous incident

In the event of a road accident, fall or other dangerous incident:

first ensure your own safety and the safety of other road users;
stop in a safe place if you can do so without creating additional danger;
secure and mark the accident site and warn other road users;
assist injured persons and call 112 if necessary;
in the event of a road accident, injury, danger or need for police assistance, call 113;
do not leave the scene of the accident until all legal obligations have been fulfilled or until authorised to do so by the relevant authority;
in the event of minor material damage, exchange details with the other parties involved and complete a European Accident Statement if necessary;
if you witness an accident, help according to your abilities and provide the authorities with the basic information: what happened, where and when it happened, how many people are involved and whether anyone is injured.
